The NO&DO

NO&DO

NOMADEJADO

THEY DID NOT ABANDON ME

If you have already visited Seville, I’m sure you have seen the symbol of NO&DO and wondered its meaning. It is everywhere. You are about to read why.

The king Alfonso X the Wise was really kind but he had ruined the economy of the city, because of that, his own son Sancho, rose up against him. He did it peacefully and he was accepted as king in all the cities but in Seville, where his father had taken shelter.

Sancho allowed that the city remained faithfull to the king Alfonso until his last days and Alfonso, who was very greatfull to the city, awarded the Cityhall of Seville with a symbol: NO + skein + DO.

In Seville, we read it like “No-madeja-do” thats how, in Andaluz, we pronounce “No me ha dejado” Spanish for “THEY DID NOT LEAVE ME”, meaning that the city of Seville never abandoned king Alfonso.
